DEMOUSTICATION Pilot Project

Douala City Council

The pilot project to combat vector-borne diseases by removing mosquitoes from certain districts of Douala is a CUD initiative. The new mayor, Dr Roger MBASSA NDINE, is concerned with the well-being and improvement of the living environment of his fellow citizens from the very first hour he takes office in February 2020, and will incorporate into the city's master plan the idea of relieving populations of the presence of mosquitoes that are vectors of several Diseases.

The pilot demoustication project was launched through a call for bids in March 2022, and the process was concluded by December of the same year with the signing of a contract for its implementation.

Solution Santé,the company that won the tender has just completed completed the first phase, which consisted in carrying out studies to identify the location of each mosquito control instrument for optimum operation in the selected sites.

The anticipated installation images of the Mosquito Box traps at the two selected sites accurately indicate the position and GPS coordinates of each trap. Solution Santé is currently working on the operational implementation of the project by the end of 2023.

The arrival and deployment of the Mosquito Box traps constitute the second phase, which will gradually rid the populations of the targeted areas of these highly troublesome creatures, as well as vectors of diseases such as malaria, Zika, chikungunya, dengue, etc.

Considering the possibility of overcoming these diseases in Douala will now be feasible with the increased number of Mosquito Box traps, whose main function is to drastically reduce the mosquito population in the city.

Did you know:

  • Africa hosts 10 out of the 11 countries that bear 70% of the burden of this global scourge.
  • malaria still kills more pregnant women and children under 5 years old?
